South African utility Eskom has launched a request for qualification for strategic partners for an initial portfolio of up to 6 GW of utility-scale renewable-energy and storage projects. The programme includes at least 2 GW of solar PV and 1 GW / 4 GWh of battery energy storage, according to Eskom’s announcement reported by pv magazine Global on 12 October 2026.
Procurement signals
Selected developers will form a pre-qualified panel for co-development and co-investment for five years. Qualified partners can then be invited into competitive requests for proposals. Projects may be located on Eskom-owned land and at existing generation sites, or be originated by partners and implemented with Eskom or Eskom Green.
What suppliers should watch
The programme points to multi-stage demand for PV modules, BESS containers, power-conversion systems, grid studies, civil works and long-term operations support. Each project is expected to use a ring-fenced special-purpose vehicle with limited-recourse or non-recourse financing. Developers and equipment suppliers should therefore prepare bankability evidence, delivery schedules, grid-compliance data and service capacity before responding to later RFPs.
