Malawi’s ESCOM Opens Tender for 20 MW/40 MWh Grid-Forming BESS

Malawi’s Electricity Supply Corporation (ESCOM) has issued an international competitive tender for a 20 MW/40 MWh grid-forming battery energy storage system at Luwinga Substation in Mzuzu City. The tender advert was created on 2026-10-06.

The contract scope covers design, procurement, supply, installation, integration, testing, commissioning, operation, maintenance and eventual transfer, with completion expected within 24 months. ESCOM scheduled a non-mandatory pre-bid meeting for 2026-10-19 and set bid submission for 2026-11-06 at 10:00 local time. COTECH has no stated relationship with the project.

For suppliers and EPCs, a grid-forming brief requires careful review of inverter controls, protection coordination, black-start or islanding requirements, site studies, training, spares and the handover boundary across the full lifecycle.
