Hawaiian Electric is seeking regulatory approval for a 20-year fixed-price power purchase agreement with Pulehu Solar on Maui. The proposed project would add 20 MW of solar generation and 80 MWh of battery storage to the island grid and is expected to produce enough clean energy for the equivalent of nearly 10,000 households annually.
Key project data
The project was selected through Hawaiian Electric’s competitive renewable procurement process. The utility says the battery can store solar energy for evening use, while its Renewable Dispatchable Generation structure would allow the utility to direct when energy is stored and dispatched. The PUC must still determine whether the agreement is in the public interest.
Procurement impact
This is a proposed project, not a commercial operation notice. Buyers should therefore separate contracted scope from future permitting, financing and construction. The project brief also highlights wildfire protection, substation siting, community engagement and cultural-resource constraints—factors that can affect layout, equipment packaging, schedule and risk allocation in island-grid projects.
