Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea multi-utility project reached full commercial operation in August 2026, according to reporting published on September 1. The isolated system combines 358 MWac of solar PV with 1,225.4 MWh of battery storage and supports tourism facilities, desalination, cooling and water treatment without relying on the national transmission network.
The engineering and procurement lesson is system integration: the battery must establish voltage and frequency, support black start and ride through faults, and balance variable PV with critical loads. Buyers evaluating remote industrial or islanded power should require clear grid-forming, controls, commissioning and long-term service scopes. COTECH did not supply this external project.
